Web Sergeants, Very Important Position

It is with great pleasure to say "Welcome Aboard" to all the Web Sergeants in the Southeast Division and other Marines as well. Becoming a Web Sergeant isn't that hard to do. However, you do have to have some fundamental understanding with computers. I am going to try my hardest to present training lessons within this page. Don't get frustrated, all of us started from the beginning. The first step is the nomenclature or terms and their meaning. These will be here and anytime you need to reference them will be no problem. Sit back "relax" and all of this will come together with some time. Again "Welcome Aboard."

* Converters for Microsoft Office 2003 *

If you have an extra $499.95 for Microsoft Office Professional 2007, you're in great shape. However, if you do not have that kind of money you may want to download the converter for free. This will allow you to view the documents and convert them to the Microsoft Office 2003 version you have. To the left you will see the Microsoft icon just click it and follow instructions. Save the $500.00 for the next week of gas you'll need...

Nomenclature:

Understanding the "nomenclature" is going to be a huge part of understanding what is going on when talking the computer lingo. Phrases such as "URL, HTML, FTP, HTTP" just to name a few, can be hard to get the meaning if no one has ever told you what they are. URL = Universal Resource Language is merely referring to the "address bar" on top of the web browser. HTML = Hyper Text Mark-up Language, this is the "code" a web site is wrote in along with a few more as in Java and C++. FTP = File Transfer Protocol, this is how the code get loaded to a web site. HTTP = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, you see this when your putting a web site address at the very beginning. This just locates and calls the web site your looking for. The term .PPS file mean PowerPoint Presentation Slide show . File extension merely means the extension at the end of a file i.e., word.doc, .doc is the file extension. So ".pps" is the file extension to indicate the PowerPoint Slide show.

Terminology

One major step in understanding and learning computers is the terms that apply to computer usage. Terms such as "word.doc" ".jpeg, or .gif." apply to files that items are saved under. For example a letter is usually typed using "Word" hence "word.doc." Ever had someone say, "send it to me in a word.doc." The file extension at the end is .doc. For pictures and animated files are known as "jpeg's". so the file extension for a picture is a ".jpeg." Animations or flags that wave or things that spin are ".gif files." A lot of really fun things can be added to sites however, Marines that do not have "Broad Band" or known as "fast access connection" may have trouble down loading a page. This is not the page that takes so long to download, it is the modem speed. Some have dial up and that is just the use of you phone line. Fast access works in conjunction with your phone or cable connection, as well as dish now.

On the links provided to the left, I will be trying to help with nomenclature and hints to help you perform as a Web Sergeant for you Department as well as Detachment. However, reading a lot of time that can help you and should be done first, before contacting me. But if the topic or problem persists and you still need some help I would be glad to help you as much as I can.

Operating Systems

There are times when people ask what type of operating system do you have? They want to know if you using Windows 95, 98, or XP, or now Vista. I personally think Vista is a memory hog because it takes 2 gigs (giga bytes) of ram, to run it. Ram is nothing more than memory, this has not a thing to do with your hard drive space. Windows XP is probably the the most common for now. I am sorry to say this to anyone that has an older system and using Windows 95, 98, and even XP, it's going to be sooner than later your going to need to upgrade your computer. *sigh*

However, be careful not to put yourself into a spot! Adds on TV or in Magazines may sound really good but, you could wind up in the same place where you are now in a very short time. What I mean by all of this is, computers are really moving full steam ahead and the technology is old when they come out at a ridiculously high price. After just a few short months you see them go on sale. You can buy a computer at good price from almost anywhere now. Dual core and terms 2 or 4 (gigs) gigabytes of ram are common now and are great for your system. Here is the catch, what type of modem speed do you have is it broad band / fast access or dial-up? This makes all the difference. (More to come)

Attachments:

Ever have a person say "hey send that attachment to me in a .jpeg format?" The person is just wanting a picture that has the file extension .jpeg. Then you send it as an attachment from your email settings. This makes picture quality very sharp and clear, also very versatile for the person doing any editing to that picture. How about this one "copy and paste it into a word.doc and email it." The person is just wanting an word.doc, this is a quick way to get information and send as an attachment. I'll add more a little later.
